How to start a humming bird feeder?
On a Need to know basis what are some things I have to know when starting a humming bird feeder? Is there a certain type of food you found that works best? Is food coloring poisonous to the humming birds? I am going to do my research.What better way to start learning than from your personal experiences! Thanks so much any tips, Do's and Dont's, Or just your success and struggles will be greatly appreciated! Thank You
The correct mix is 1 part sugar to 4 parts water (1 cup of sugar added to 4 cups of water). There is NO need to add food coloring...if the feeder itself has color that is enough. Yes, it IS thought that the red food coloring can be harmful to hummingbirds...more research is needed but for now do not risk harming them..leave it out..it is not necessary at all. It is thought that it could build up in their kidney and liver making them ill. Make sure you do not hang in direct sunlight or this can cause the mixture to go bad and it may ferment which can then kill hummingbirds. Make sure to change out the mixture often especially if the weather is hot. Clean the feeder out each time between refills so that mold does not grow. Hummers usually find feeders pretty fast, but if you don't see them right away be patient..sure they will show up eventually.
