My tarantula was injured months ago and still wont eat? Does anyone have ANY answers, im afraid to lose him???
About two months ago my Mexican Red Knee Tarantula broke two of his back legs. I believe he broke them by falling from the top of his cage to the bottom, which is about 14 in. high. He bled for a few days, and i assumed he'd be fine. Although his legs are okay now, I know that he isnt because he hasnt eaten since. Normally he ate constantly, which caused me to start buying him feeder mice. Now any food i put in his tank he just ignores, in fact he doesnt do anything. He sits in a log thats in his tank in the same position, he doesnt even go out to drink water from his sponge. I usually have to check often to see if hes even alive. I have two other tarantulas, a bird eating and a rose haired, and they've been fine. I am really concerned for the mexican red knee, he is my favorite out of all three that i have. If anyone has ANY answers as to what i could do it would be sincerely appreciated.
Well, first off, replace that sponge with a real water dish so that he can actually replenish the hemolyph (tarantula equivalent to blood) that he lost because of his damaged legs. He may not be able to move at all if he lost too much because tarantulas use a blood pressure system rather then muscles to move their legs. So, put the water dish close to him. You can even try using a medicine dropper to drip some water right over his fangs. I've gotten sick ones to drink that way before. Don't flip him over or anything, just drip water right over those cute furry little fang covers and hopefully he'll drink it. You don't have to worry about drowning him by doing that since they use booklungs to breathe which are located on the underside of their abdomen.
Sometimes when a tarantula is injured, they will go into a fast in preparation for an emergency molt. They will molt sooner then they would have in an attempt to heal.
Only offer him prekilled prey for now until he either molts or acts like he's feeling better.
Another thing you should do in the meantime, is add more substrate to your enclosures.. Unless it's an arboreal species, the substrate should be close enough to the top where your spider can not fall further then its own leg span..
