When is a good time to stop feeding Humming Birds so they will Migrate south?

I just bought a Humming Bird Feeder this year, and I remember hearing that you should stop feeding them close to fall so they will migrate south, but I can't remember when was recommended. I live in BC, Canada and summer is 1/2 over here. When do I stop filling my feeder?

Tina you are correct in worrying. Often fed hummingbirds delay too long in migrating south since they have a ready food supply. Sometimes they make it anyway but not always.

In the south you are supposed to stop feeding before the first killing frost. However in BC I suspect (I don't live up there so do not know) you can get a killing frost in any month. Therefore I suggest you stop feeding when you notice the wildflowers start dying off for the year. Perhaps late August Early September would be my GUESS. This will give them plenty of time to get south.

As to the geese story this has been reported but Many Ornithologists deny this. As far as hummingbirds top speeds? They can fly at over 50 miles per hour so yes they could make the journey south on their own. Do they? We don't know!
