Further to prev Q, I'm looking for spec ideas to earn living from 2.5 acres (approx 1.5 acres avail for grow).?

20m setbacks on 2 sides/5m setbcks on 2 sides.
Wet, clay soil. Dam, double garage, power, tank water - no house.
Cool, temperate climate (-5 in winter & lots of rain, hot, dry summers, gale-force winds) in Tasmania, Australia.
Orchard is okay, but don't want to sell fruit.
Veggies okay ("W" suggested zucchini), but not first choice.
Saffron grows around here, but too intricate and fussy to grow.
Ginseng maybe (I haven't researched this yet).
I'm thinking herbs of some kind (for such a small amount of land).
I'd like to do "value-added" product, such as soap, lotions, or I'm open to other ideas to be made from something I grow or raise.
Goats or sheep possibly, but how many on 1.5 acres? (milk, cheese, butter, etc).
Possums & birds eating things a problem here.
I just want other, specific ideas about how to earn a living ($50,000 per year) from the land - - - please give me good ideas!!!!! Thanks

That just isn't enough land to "farm" anything that is legal to grow.... and expect a $50K annual return.

Orchard would take a decade or more to mature.... no way can you grow $50K of zucchini or any other veggie in that amount of space (1.5 acres). I mean... by the average zucchini price at my grocer....that would be approximately 50,000 zucchini's, maybe more, because unless you sell them direct to consumers you aren't getting a retail price for them. You can get 4-5 good zucchini's per plant.... you could train them on trellises to maximize space..... but at that rate you would still have to plant 1000 zucchini plants that survive to production to make $50K.

Asparagus sells for a premium because it's harvest window is so short.... but that is another reason why you wouldn't be able to make that kind of money off of it..... but it could be part of the equation to make some money. The problem is that it takes up a lot of space for the rest of the year.... after the early spring harvest.

Swiss Chard grows very dense.... just not sure there is that much of a market for it.

Tomatoes give you a lot of bang for the buck.... since they can be trained to grow more vertically you can plant them pretty densely and get 20 lbs. or more of tomatoes from each plant.

You can make some money growing veggies.... but perhaps look into purchasing some land if you want to make it your sole source of income.

Either that or build greenhouses.... grow veggies hydroponically.... and be able to utilize the land year round.

P.S. Ginseng grew wild where I grew up.... the reason that so many people search for patches of wild ginseng.... is that no one has really figured out how to cultivate it with any success. It grows in forests.... and apparently it requires VERY specific habitat. It's pricey.... precisely because it is nearly impossible to grow commercially.

Good luck.... if I was you I would try a range of options first year.... and see which one makes you the most money.... then move ahead with that crop the following year.

Also.... I have heard of people making good money from mushroom farming.... but that requires shaded spaces with even temperatures. If you built structures and kept them above freezing you could produce mushrooms year round.
