Timberrrr!!!!! Building A Shed For Those Woodworking Projects
Last winter we moved from a home with a huge oversized double-car garage that included a separate room which had been set up for woodworking. We moved to a very nice home with a stand of about 30 redwood trees. The lot is a little oversized for a city lot, but the single car garage was tiny, miniscule, hobbitesk, definitely not large enough to accommodate my building tools
Our first project was to drop some of the large redwoods to clear an area for a two car garage and workshop. About this time, we started feeling the effects of the economic downturn, so we downsized our project. We had the trees milled on site to dimensions we could use for a fence and storage shed. If you have some trees on your property, you might want to look into this. There's probably someone in your community with a portable mill and often they'll do the job for a percentage of the milled wood. Just look in the phone book under ‘tree service' and any arborist should be able to direct you.
We had the fence boards rough sawn to full one inch dimension and I dog eared the tops with my trusty skill saw. That's one beautiful fence. Try to even find full dimension second growth redwood fence boards at the lumber yard. If you do find any, I guarantee they'll want gold bullion and your first born in exchange, and honestly, it just wouldn't feel right leaving your child at the lumber yard. One more thing, there was no permitting required as long as we were not harvesting the trees to sell.
For the shed, we used the 1x8 boards for siding and flooring. We also had 2x4 framing stock milled. With the shed we needed permitting, therefore shed plans. We needed to submit a simple site plan to the building department, with an estimate of costs. I found free shed plans on line that included a materials list which I was able to use for the cost analysis. This site also had plans for hundreds of woodworking projects, great plans for home and garden projects, and projects to work on with the kids or grandkids, birdhouses, playground equipment, etc.
Well, it's time to begin the planning phase for this summer's projects.
