Norfolk Wildlife
The county of Norfolk, located on the north-easternmost coast of the country, is home to a wide variety of animals, ranging from birds to seals. Much of the county has been named a reserve and conservancy area and there is a bounty of hiking, walking, and cycling trails for visitors to enjoy that will show off the many species of animal that calls this area home. The Norfolk Broads has miles of waterway in which boaters can enjoy a leisurely day observing the wildlife.
Brent Geese, Oystercatchers, Ringed Plover, Shelducks, Snow Buntings and three varieties of terns can be found at the Blakeney Point National Nature Reserve outside of the town of Holt. The reserve has the longest area of undeveloped coastland and habitat and the point is the home of close to five hundred seals that can be seen sunning themselves during the day. The Holkham National Nature Reserve is probably the most versified of animal life, flora, and terrain in Norfolk. In addition to the large variety of birds found here, seals make part of the beach their home and butterflies are plentiful among the flowers.
Sheringham Park is home to some of the most famous Rhododendrons, Azaleas, and other woodland specimens. Adder, Muntjac, Red and Roe deer, great crested newts, and green tiger beetles call this area home. The Wash National Nature Reserve is the largest tidal estuary in the country and is the most important feeder areas for waders and wildfowl during the winter.
Most of these reserves change a small fee or ask for a donation for admission. The variety of birds to be found in the area is a birdwatchers dream and there is always wildlife around to be seen when visiting this area of the United Kingdom.
The Norfolk Wildlife Trust
In 1926 the Norfolk Wildlife Trust was created in an effort to protect the wildlife and their environments throughout the county. Norfolk was the first of what is now a network of 47 wildlife trusts covering the country. Norfolk is the oldest trust caring for forty reserve sites, ten kilometres of Norfolk coastline, the Norfolk Broads, and woodlands that date back hundreds of years.
With the purchase of 400 acres of marshland at Cley-next-the-Sea in 1926 the Norfolk Wildlife Trust started to create its first bird breeding and conservation reserve. This has turned out to be one of the most successful conservation programmes in the nation. Cley was the forerunner of all the others and has been replicated all over the United Kingdom, helping to bring back many species of birds and other wildlife that were in danger of extinction.
The five biggest reserves under the control of the Norfolk Wildlife Trust are: the Cley Marshes Nature Reserve with its brand new visitor centre and its resident population of Avocets; Foxley Wood, an ancient woodland; Weeting Heath, what is left of Breck heath; Ranworth Broad and Hickling Broad. All of them are open to visitors and educational groups and facilities for disabled visitors are first class.
