natural pond can my gold fish live in it with...?
natural rain water and a pond liner i plan on building a stream would my feedergold fish go up it???and can the 2 feeder gold fish 5 inches...survive with nature frogs,bugs,birds etc.???(i will have a pond filter that filters the water and puts it in the steam to go back to the pond)
i live in ohio so ima have a de-icer hook up to of them for incase one goes up i can hurry and hook the other up the pond size 2,000 gallons
thats the point of me asking if they will die how do i prevent it
Remember unless it is really raining, rain water with evaporation will still mean you need to top off the pond. Have you calculated the water flow of this stream with the rate in the pond?
Yes your feeder fish will survive fine with frogs bugs etc. Remember they need veggies so you will want some plants as well. (These also attract bugs) Floating plants like water lettuce and water hythis' also work great not only for food, shade in the summer and deters birds and coons.
You do not need a deicer or heater in the winter time. You are better off allowing your pond to freeze over completely. Your fish will go into a state of hibernation and will not need to eat nor have holes in the ice until spring. Filters pumps etc need to be removed as well. No de icer. I live here in PA near the Ohio border and do not use deicers in the winter. You will need to remove any plants and pumps when the water temperatures hit 55 on a daily basis. Stop feeding your fish all together. Allow the ice to form and DO NOT TOUCH it. No holes no pounding on the ice just let it go. Your fish will be fine over the winter.
When spring comes and the ice is off the pond (water temps around 50) you can replace your pumps and turn them on.
Also you can cover the pond with bird netting to help deter birds, coons, neighborhood cats etc. Do not place fake bird statues anywhere near the pond, this just attracts more birds.
Herons and Crains are really the ones to worry about and once they realize the net is on it they won't bother.
