Barn Bird House
Help with an animal poem interpretation?
It is by Ellen Bryant Voigt, called rescue. I cannot find it anywhere on the internet. I believe its about a lizard...the actuality of the poem confuses me, even before I get into the metaphorical. Any/all interpretations would be appreciated!
All morning you squat in the weeds,
your head small and still
like the head of the snake at rest
on a green blade: no terror for you
in his dense body, you would follow him
into the tangle of brush by the barn
to see whatever house he keeps there.
I watch you watching the snake
or gathering the fallen bird,
the dog in the road, those stiff bodies
from whom you cannot withhold your tenderness.
As if they were your children,
they call you again and again into deep water,
as I wait on the dock,
braiding the long line that knots and tangles.
The poet watches from a dock on the water's edge as heshe prepares a braided line, perhaps for use in fishing from the dock. This fisherman watches a scavenger, watching for food to collect. He watches the the myriad of animal fauna evident in the water and at the water's edge. His attention is drawn to the scavenger who has been busy all morning. It is "rescuing" the dead carrion, as does a scavenger, thus removing the decaying bodies and cleaning up the surrounds. The "tenderness" mentioned is born from this noble purpose. This may well be a large lizard or even an alligator. The fact it can move a dead dog makes me think it is an alligator and also the description of squatting also strengthens my assumption. The alligator is not fearful of the snake but could well raid the snake's nest for eggs.
I am not sure this is a metaphorical poem. I am certain it is not about a fatty obsessed by food as proposed by the first answerer! It is about the food chain and the delicate balance of nature in providing food for all creatures and it cleaning away the freshly dead. Our poet also has a place as he too will fish from this water to feed himself. It does seem nature is in harmony and each creature has their place in the food chain.
The collected carrion is ferried to deep water where it will wait til the alligator eats it at its leisure after the hunt. This discounts the guess that the animal is a cat. Nor is it possible to be a parent protecting children.
Perhaps our fisherman/woman prepares his line to catch this alligator?
