Feeding birds in the winter?
I have a bird feeder that i keep full at all times with black oiled sunflower seeds with a mixture of some other seeds (and with dried cherries in it ) i just bought a mixture. Well my real question is i also have a suet feeder and for some reason the birds stop eating it? I have tried different brands but they just dont seem to want it. should i just give up on it? i thought about emptying the plastic container and replacing it with some peanut butter and seed mixed. Is that ok? Is there a certain brand of peanut butter i need to use? I also want to put out some Bird Houses for this spring. What kind do i need? I have a few woodpeckers around. i have Tufted Titmice, Cardinals, and Chickadees. i have seen a few Jays but i try to keep them away because they bully the others. What kind of houses or boxes do i need? Any advice is appreciated. Even if it has nothing to do with my questions.
we get suet from the butcher, they get it when they are processing cattle (and once we got buffalo) it is cheap, you keep it frozen til you are ready to use it, and the birds love it. store bought suet is mostly seeds and processed grease and the birds don't like it--it can also be stale. Suet is the best high energy food for winter feeding. Make sure you have a water source, last winter we were able to find a bird bath defroster and it kept the fountain thawed out and ready for all the neighborhood birds. They came in droves. For seed food we stick with the black oiled sunfower seeds. whole peanuts can be fun though.
