Chicken House Plan With Multi-style Option
There is more than one way to build a chicken coop. Depending on whether you live on a farm or in an urban area, you will need a chicken house plan that suits your needs. This article outlines some different designs.
Farm-style Chicken House
If you're not fussed with the aesthetics of your chicken house, and just need a safe, secure place to house your birds, a basic "box" design will suffice. It's very unattractive, and all you need is some cheap wooden framing and a weatherproof material for the roof and walls. If you live on a farm you'll probably already have most of the "junk" you need. You don't even need to build proper nests, and can use cardboard boxes if you really want to cut costs.
Urban-style Chicken House
Chicken coops can be quite beautiful if you put in a bit of effort. If you live in a more urban area you'll want to build a coop that looks clean and aesthetically pleasing. You can use the same wooden frame (pine or hardwood) as the farm-style coop, but use high quality, painted material for the walls and roof. It's also easy to build a shingle-style roof, which boost the appeal a lot.
Flooring Options
Believe it or not, choosing the right flooring for either designs can make a dramatic difference, not only in egg yields, but also in the look of the coop. There are 3 main materials: straw, sand, or sawdust. Straw is generally quite clean and easily replaceable, sand drains easily for areas with a wet climate, and sawdust is cheap and long-term.
