Bird feeder question?!?
I have a few questions about bird feeders that I would like to get answers to. I have read that the bird feeders should not be placed near windows for the birds' safety. What other places should and/or shouldn't a bird feeder be placed (bushes, trees, fences, etc)? I've heard hummingbird feeders are normally colored red to attract hummingbirds. Second question: are there specific colors a bird feeder should be painted to attract birds?? Any other info I may need to questions I did not think of to ask would be greatly appreciated. The bird supply aisle had a lot of this one particular "wild bird food" had on the packaging "colorful bird blend." So, that's what I bought.
Currently, it's on a shepherd's hook that sways a little bit which makes me think birds will not be inclined to use it. Should I abandon the hook and go for a more solid pole mount.
And then there are the feeders that mount on window panes... I have two of those and they're always busy/
Hummingbird feeders are red and yellow because the REFLECTED light range of those colors attract the hummers. There is no need to paint other bird feeders unless you just want to dress them up. Once the birds know there's food available there, they'll come whatever the color.
Black oil sunflower seeds are a good all around choice for feeding, even Wrens like them.. Have several types of feeders. A platform feeder is preferred by Doves, Blue Jays, Bluebirds, not necessarily at the same time.
The smaller Bluebird doesn't hang around the larger more aggressive Blue Jays.
Tube feeders of Niger (Nyjer) seeds are a favorite of the Goldfinch.
Orioles and Mockingbirds like grape (and other) jellies.
Suet feeders attract woodpeckers and Flickers who also like left over breakfast grits.
