Unusual Bird Houses
Has anyone else had a goffin cockatoo attack his/her spouse?
We have three cockatoos; two umbrellas and one goffin. The goffin hates my wife. We have had the goffin for 14 years. My wife basically raised her. We have had the male umbrella for 12 years and the female for four years. We do not clip the wings of our birds. Within the last few years the female goffin has acted aggressive toward the wife. Several weeks ago when my wife was bringing the three birds in from the outdoor aviary and the female goffin got away. This isn't unusual and happens all of the time. What was shocking is the fact that the goffin actually flew at my wife's face and bit her just below the eye. My wife fought her back and she tried to attack several more times. What is with this bird? She is now confined to her cage in the house, unless my wife is no where to be seen.
Its time to clip the goffin and begin behavioral training. I am sure you want the bird to remain flighted, but remember: feathers grow back. When the bird cannot fly, it'll remove one part of the independence. Behavior tends to improve when an aggressive bird is clipped. And that way, you can have the bird out and getting attention, without the worry your wife will walk in the room and get attacked.
