How can I feed small wild birds without it being 'stolen' by seagulls? (UK)?

Last year I put the food in a feeder but no luck. Then I scattered it on the shed roof and the rain washed it away. I then started throwing it over my fence into the back field but couldn't tell if this was successful as I cannot see due to the fencing. I now have a cat so I don't want to attract them into my garden, which they don't do anyway because it's all decking and slabs.I even tried the Blue Peter wild bird cake - melted lard with peanuts oats and raisins mixed in. Once it has set it is hanged up outside. This was successful a few years ago when I lived in a different house but not last year.
If I continue to throw it over the fence into the field do you think they will find it?

If you throw food over the fence you are encouraging rats as well as seagulls. Not a good idea.

Out of interest what food did you put in the feeder you had and what sort of feeder was it? If you put in standard "wild bird seed" them hardly any birds will bother, its full of wheat usually and the only birds that like wheat are chaffinches, sparrows and collared doves, none of which use a tube feeder.

If you didn't have a cat I would advocate buying a small clear plastic tube feeder and some small black sunflower seeds, also a wire mesh feeder and some peanuts. This should attrract birds to your garden. Most pet shops stock this type of bird food/feeders.

As you have a cat you shouldn't feed the birds because your cat will probably eat them which sort of defeats the object really.
