Do ants keep the hummingbirds away?
I was looking out my kitchen window when I seen a hummingbird fly up. He didn't land though. I noticed a bunch of ants at the feeder. I went out there and changed the nectar and cleaned the feeder. Today they're back (ants) and now it looks as if they brought the whole damn family! How do you get rid of the ants without hurting the hummingbirds?? Thanks!
What I do with my feeders is use Vaseline on the hangers from the top to about 3 inches up. Then I apply a pretty big glob of it smoothed on the top of the feeder itself. It doesn't melt down over the feeder, and although a few ants at first will get stuck in it..the rest must see what happens and they won't cross the barrier. It also will catch any other insects that happen to land in it. Gets a bit yuck after a bit so when I refill the feeders I just clean it off and reapply. Doesn't bother the hummingbirds at all for it to be on there but the ants hate it.
