How to attract birds to a small swampy area?
We have a small swampy area (about an acre or two, depending on the water level - it's not very deep, just a little mushy) and we would like to attract birds there, and maybe even get some to nest there. It's in the Midwest and pretty far north, so it gets very cold in the winter but stays warm in the summer. The area is very close to the woods.
If we put up a few Bird Houses what would be the best option? A duck house would be cool, but we haven't seen ducks there for several years. Is our best bet to put up a few plain birdhouses for the swallows, or could we attract something bigger and cooler?
Just remember, when you attract pleasant birds, you have to be prepared to put up with the riffraff as well - grackles, crows, jays and hawks. Google the name of your county with these words

and see what plants belong there. Your local county co-operative extension may even have plants for you to re-introduce. This should be enough to attract local birds. You may not need to put up nesting boxes, if you already have the right trees. If you do put up boxes, let your co-operative extension show you what shape, size, size of hole, and what kind of pole.
